Thinking that a game console is the ideal Christmas present? Here are some of the best options for you consider

We all know what Christmas means, it is the time to spend out on our loved ones and make sure that they get a treat. However, we all also know that if we can save some money, whilst still giving our loved ones a treat, then all the better.

We all know what Christmas means, it is the time to spend out on our loved ones and make sure that they get a treat. However, we all also know that if we can save some money, whilst still giving our loved ones a treat, then all the better.

One of the more expensive gifts that you can buy has to be a games console, which means that you want to make sure that you get the decision right. To help you, we have put together our guide to the main games consoles and which one might be the best one to buy.

What are the main options to think about?

When you consider games consoles at the moment, there are going to be three main consoles that pop into mind. The Sony PlayStation 4, the Microsoft Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch. If you are not a gaming expert, then chances are that you will have no idea what is the difference between these consoles, and this is understandable considering just how close the Xbox and PlayStation offering are in what they can do.

Both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 are designed to work somewhat like a mid-range PC, which means that they combine high-end graphics and smooth gameplay. They also have higher range consoles (the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X) both of which are known to offer compatibility with 4K TVs for the optimum displays.

Compared to these two, the Switch is very different. The console isn’t quite up to the same standard as the other two, which means that the graphics are not going to be as high a standard and the gameplay may not be quite as smooth. But what the Switch offers is versatility and portability, allowing you to play on your TV and play on the go. Something that the other two simply cannot give you.

So, which one to go for?

Now you know a little bit more about each console, the time has come to think about which one might be the right choice. The best approach to take is to consider a few questions which can help you to figure out which console to go for.

Who is the console for and who will be using it?

The first thing to think about is who you are actually buying the games console for. This will have an impact on which console is going to be the right one for them. Younger children may appreciate the Switch more than any other console, similarly, if you are buying a family friendly console that is going to encourage everyone to come together, then you may want to pick the Switch too.

For teenagers, or for adults, then one of the more powerful consoles are likely to be the best choice. So, opt for a PS4 or an Xbox One.

What kind of games do they like playing?

Another important consideration is the type of games that the person who you are buying for likes to play. One of the “downfalls” of the Switch (although not if you are a fan) is that it really only offers Nintendo brand games. This is great if you like Mario, Zelda and of course Pokémon, however, if you are looking for a broader game collection, then this may not suit you.

The PS4 and the Xbox One have a much wider game catalogue, you can buy some of the biggest titles out there such as those created by Actvision, EA and Capcom. Between the PS4 and the Xbox One there are also some differences. Both consoles do offer the same game options in the most part, however, they also have their own specific series that may have an impact on which console you choose. This includes the Forza Series and Halo on the Xbox and Unchartered, God of War and of course Marvel’s Spiderman on the PS4.

Do you want to play online?

Many people now choose to play online, as well as play locally. Which is good news as all of the consoles offer some form of online gaming option. There are additional fees in order to connect online and it is almost impossible to match up across consoles (so if you are buying for a child you might want to find out what console their friends have so that you can match it). Whilst the Switch does have online playability, it really is designed ideally for local co-operative play (when you are all in the same room) which means that you may not want to consider this console for online play.

Do you need your console to do anything else?

For the Xbox One and PS4, gone are the days when you can only use your games console as just that. Now, games consoles are packed full of add ins which allow you to stream TV, watch DVDs and Blu-Rays and even check out the internet. However, the same is not true for the Nintendo Switch. This is just a games console, it does not support any of the third-party entertainment applications, which can be ideal if you are a parent and you are worried about what your younger child can access when they are on their games console.

One thing that you will notice with all of these options is that the price can be high. That said, there are ways that you can keep the cost down as much as possible. By buying a trade-in console. Trade-in consoles are second-hand, which means that the price is so much lower than it would otherwise be if you bought the console brand new. However, this lower price doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to worry about quality. When you buy from a dedicated trade-in stockist, you can have peace of mind that what you have bought is the highest standard possible, that it is has been checked and made sure that everything is in the best possible working order.
